‘Access to space’ is a phrase that holds multiple special meanings to Christine Shepperd. Shepperd, who serves as the Integration Analysis Lead for Gateway Deep Space Logistics, is no stranger to overcoming setbacks and forging “access” in pursuit of her dreams.
Shepperd’s adoration for space and accessibility was sparked by her mother, who was accepted into NASA’s Mission Specialist Astronaut Training Program in the 80s. Unfortunately, her mom’s dream went unrealized when the program was cancelled. Yet, the example of her mother’s attitude of “carpe diem” – or, seize the day – inspired Shepperd’s resolve to blaze a new trail as she leaned into both personal and professional prospects.
While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting at the University of Central Florida, Shepperd experienced a life-altering horseback riding accident that permanently placed her in a wheelchair.
“My mother’s ability to push through boundaries and overcome challenges in her own life was inspirational to me,” remarked Shepperd.
Shepperd graduated from UCF in 2007 and continued her family’s legacy at NASA when she began as a co-op in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, which led to her work on multiple projects and programs for the next 11 years. That is when Gateway’s Deep Space Logistics project came calling, and Shepperd was “over the Moon” excited.
“When I think about the Gateway Program – NASA’s new Moon orbiting outpost – I envision accessing more of our mysteriously vast solar system,” said Shepperd. “Gateway gives us new access to the Moon but also extends our ability to explore Mars and beyond.”
Part of the Gateway Program’s mission is also to empower its team to make decisions and implement innovative ideas and solutions. “There’s an intentional effort to access the best in each of us for a peak program result, and I truly love that,”
Shepperd said.
In addition to serving on the Gateway Logistics Services Source Evaluation Board, Shepperd led the implementation of project infrastructure, financial, and documentation controls. She currently leads the Integration and Analysis group that directs the creation, management, and execution of business processes to support mission operations and execution throughout the project’s lifecycle.
“When people ask about joining NASA, I emphasize that few of us are rocket scientists or astronauts,” said Shepperd. “We represent all Americans who are passionate about space and think creatively to push exploration farther into the heavens.”
Shepperd’s personal life is centered on her husband, Zak, and two sons. Shepperd describes her own “perfect space” as listening to music, watching football, and eating dinners together with her family.
