The public is invited to set their sights on Jupiter and spring night-time constellations at the next STEM in the Sky astronomy event from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center.
The event begins with an astronomy presentation in the Visitor Center auditorium at 7 p.m. followed by night sky observations through telescopes and binoculars on the grounds of the Visitor Center from 7:30 until 10 p.m.
Two 30-minute constellation tours of the night sky will be offered at 8 and 9 p.m. The constellation tours are limited to 25 people and will be available on a first come first serve basis.
Astronomy-themed movies, hands-on activities and crafts also will be available throughout the event.
The event is free and open to the public. The astronomy presentation will take place regardless of weather. However, the telescope viewing and constellation tours are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.
The final 2017 STEM in the Sky Astronomy Series event, conducted in partnership with the Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation, will feature the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.
The STEM in the Sky Astronomy Series is funded in part through the 2015 Competitive Program for Science Museums, Planetariums, and NASA Visitor Centers.
The NASA Visitor Center, located on Va. Rt. 175 about six miles from U. S. Route 13 and five miles from Chincoteague, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
